Dr. Xu investigates individual and household decision making to identify genetic and environmental factors influencing financial behavior, and the mechanisms that can be employed to improve to decision maker welfare in the face of financial distress. She seeks to characterize social, economic, and legal environments that promote conscious and sound financial decisions among individuals and households, especially among those with limited financial literacy and great financial constraints. Her research provides policy implications for financial regulation, consumer financial protection, financial education, and neighborhood stability.
